Abstract

The automotive industry is recognized as one of the largest and most critical sectors of the global economy. Providing employment for millions of people, serving as a key component of international trade, and forming the foundation of modern mobility, this sector is also at the center of environmental and social challenges. The sector's traditional dependence on fossil fuels has made it a major contributor to global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The entire lifecycle of vehicles—ranging from raw material procurement to production, use, and end-of-life management—consumes a considerable amount of energy and natural resources. The automotive industry, despite being a cornerstone of the global economy and mobility, is on the brink of a fundamental transformation due to its environmental and social impacts. This study examines the three main dimensions of sustainability in the automotive sector: environmental (low-emission vehicles and a circular economy), economic (new business models and competitiveness), and social (ethical supply chains and workforce transformation). It emphasizes that electric vehicle technologies, sustainable supply chain management, and corporate social responsibility practices play a critical role in the sector’s future.
