Medicinal plant distillates, by-products rich in secondary metabolites such as essential oils and polyphenols, represent a valuable and sustainable source of bioactive compounds for the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. Beyond their traditional use as flavoring and fragrance agents, these distillates have attracted growing interest as natural preservatives, exhibiting antimicrobial activity against a wide range of microorganisms, including foodborne pathogens, and thereby contributing to the control of microbial spoilage and microbial-related diseases in humans and plants. In addition to their antimicrobial potential, essential oils and polyphenols derived from medicinal plant distillates display notable antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, and antiviral properties, supporting their use as food additives, nutritional supplements, plant protection agents, and pharmacologically active ingredients in cosmetic and pharmaceutical formulations. Given the increasing demand for natural, health-promoting, and eco-friendly alternatives to synthetic additives, medicinal plant distillates — by-products of the essential oil and herbal industries — are emerging as a promising, sustainable resource with broad cross-sector applications. Further research is warranted to characterize their bioactive profiles fully and to validate their efficacy and safety for industrial-scale application.
