The Role of Professional and Subject-Specific Standards in the General and Professional Development of Biology Teachers

Abstract

Professional and subject-specific standards are fundamental to improving the quality of biology education and supporting student-centered teaching aligned with contemporary educational practices. Beyond developing scientific knowledge, these standards foster students' scientific literacy, critical thinking, and ability to apply biological concepts in real-life contexts. They also contribute to teachers' continuous professional development by strengthening pedagogical competence, subject expertise, and the effective integration of inquiry-based learning and modern instructional technologies.
This study examined the understanding and implementation of professional and subject-specific standards among biology teachers and Master's students in biology. A mixed-methods approach was employed, involving teachers from three secondary schools in Tirana and first- and second-year Master's students. Data were collected through student questionnaires and teacher interviews to evaluate perceptions, implementation practices, and existing challenges.
The findings emphasize the significant role of professional and subject-specific standards in enhancing teaching quality and student learning outcomes. They also identify areas requiring further professional support and provide evidence-based recommendations to strengthen biology teacher education and improve the implementation of educational standards in schools.
