Steel structures within fuel terminals and storage facilities are continuously exposed to atmospheric and operational environments that accelerate corrosion degradation. Conventional maintenance practices generally rely on abrasive blasting and chemical-based surface preparation methods, resulting in high maintenance costs, long downtime, environmental impacts, and recurring coating failures. To address these challenges, PT Pertamina Patra Niaga developed CORVEX, a biomass-based Bio-Rust Converter utilizing natural active compounds to convert active corrosion into a stable protective layer before coating application.
The study evaluates CORVEX implementation as an alternative corrosion treatment method for steel assets in Pertamina Patra Niaga facilities. Performance evaluation was conducted through laboratory testing, field application, economic analysis, and sustainability assessment. The results indicate significant improvement in coating adhesion, corrosion resistance, maintenance efficiency, and reduction of maintenance duration. Maintenance costs decreased by approximately 22%, coating-related expenditures decreased by about 35%, and project duration was reduced by approximately 28%. In addition, the technology contributed to lower VOC emissions, reduced abrasive waste generation, and improved occupational safety performance.
The findings demonstrate that biomass-based rust conversion technology can provide a technically feasible, environmentally sustainable, and economically attractive solution for extending steel asset service life while supporting corporate sustainability objectives.
