Polikistik over sendromu (PCOS), her kadının hayatının bir döneminde yumurtalıklarında gelişen
bir tümördür. Yumurtalık tümörleri doğurganlık çağındaki kadınlarda sık görülür ve bu kistlerin çoğu
endometrioma ve dermoid tümörlerdir. Bazı tümörler hiçbir belirtiye neden olmazken bazıları pelvik ağrı,
dismenore, kısırlık ve ele gelen kitle gibi semptomlara neden olur. Bunlardan bazıları başka nedenlerle
yapılan ultrason veya görüntüleme tetkikleri sırasında ortaya çıkabilir. Patogenezde birçok faktörün rol
oynadığına inanılmaktadır ancak kesin nedeni hala bilinmemektedir. Son araştırmalar oksidatif stres ile
birçok hastalık arasındaki ilişkiye odaklanmıştır. Oksidatif stres, vücuttaki serbest radikaller ile
antioksidan savunma mekanizmaları arasındaki dengesizlikten kaynaklanır. Hücrelerdeki oksidanlar ve
antioksidanlar arasındaki dengesizlik olan oksidatif stres (OS), polikistik over sendromunun (PCOS)
patogenezinde önemli rol oynayan birçok faktörden biridir. PCOS esas olarak kadınlarda kronik
anovülasyona ve kısırlığa yol açan üreme hormonal dengesizliğini ifade eder. İlginçtir ki PCOS işletim
sistemi birçok bozukluk ve hastalıkla ilişkilendirilebilir. Bu çalışma, PCOS'ta OS'nin karakteristik
belirteçlerine ve insülin direnci (IR), hiperandrojenemi, obezite, kronik inflamasyon, kardiyovasküler
hastalık ve kanser bağlamında PCOS ile OS arasındaki ilişkiye odaklanmıştır. İlginçtir ki, PCOS
hastalarında kardiyovasküler komplikasyonlar ortaya çıkmadan önce artan oksidatif durum ve artan
antioksidan durum için yetersiz telafi gözlenmektedir. Ek olarak serbest radikaller PCOS hastalarında
kanser gelişimini teşvik etmektedir. Oksidatif stres (OS) ile polikistik over sendromu (PCOS) arasında
genetik, epigenetik ve çevresel bağlantılar vardır ve bu ilişki karmaşık bir klinik profile yansımaktadır.
Serbest oksijen radikallerinin vücut üzerindeki etkisini azaltmak ve toksinleri uzaklaştırmak için
antioksidanların etkili bir şekilde kullanılması gerekir. Bu çalışma metabolik, üreme ve kanser
komplikasyonlarına odaklanarak OS'nin PCOS sendromunun patogenezindeki rolünü özetlemekte ve
tartışmaktadır. Ancak bu verilere rağmen oksijen stresinin kadınlarda PCOS gelişimini veya hiperglisemi,
IR, kardiyovasküler ve kanser komplikasyonlarından kaynaklanan ikincil hastalıkları etkileyip
etkilemediği hala belirsizdir. Sonuç olarak, Polikistik over sendromu (PCOS) ile oksidatif stres arasındaki
ilişki incelenmiş ve PCOS’ın önlenmesine yardımcı olabilecek yeterli antioksidan içeren gıdaların
tüketilmesinin faydalı olabileceği sonucuna varıldı.
